JD Vance, R-Ohio, made an unusual remark about his political opponents during a rally in Greensboro, North Carolina, on Monday, referring to them as the “fart left” instead of the “far left.” Vance, who was campaigning for GOP Senate nominee Michael Whatley, insisted the slip of the tongue was unintentional.
“I promise that was an accident,” Vance told the crowd after the remark. He then added, “I usually don’t misspeak, but I just called them the ‘fart left,’ not the ‘far left.’ I promise that was an accident.” Vance appeared to find amusement in the gaffe, smiling as he discussed the potential reaction from the media.
Social media users quickly reacted to the comment. One post noted the supposed insult and questioned if this was the new nomenclature for Democrats, adding, “We literally have fucking children running our government.”
Vance’s verbal misstep occurred months after President Donald Trump drew attention for coining the term “Dumocrats” to describe the Democratic Party. Trump had explained his linguistic choice by saying, “I take the ‘b’ off because most people don’t know that dumb ends with a ‘b.’”
