Vice President JD Vance delivered a keynote address at the GOP midterm convention that generated significant buzz among attendees, many of whom suggested he is positioned to be Donald Trump's successor in 2028. The perceived momentum for Vance was amplified by the absence of other potential 2028 contenders, such as Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and by President Trump's decision to speak earlier in the convention.

Vance's speech on the final day of the convention provided him with a prominent platform. While Trump delivered his remarks on the first day, Vance's address followed a shorter closing speech by the former president, allowing Vance to capture the spotlight. Chants of "JD 28" were heard from the crowd, and Vance acknowledged the sentiment, telling attendees, "Let’s take care of business this November, then we’ll worry about what comes next."

Attendees noted a difference in Vance's speaking style compared to Trump's. While Trump is known for his extemporaneous remarks, Vance largely adhered to his prepared speech. During the address, Vance encountered a protester holding a Mexican flag, whom he addressed directly before security intervened. "My friend, if you love Mexico so much, get your ass over there," Vance stated. He then remarked to the audience that the incident highlighted a symbol of the far left and suggested the protester should be waving the U.S. flag. Attendees praised Vance's handling of the interruption, with one calling it a sign of presidential readiness.

"He didn’t look like some guy who you’re thinking maybe they’re grooming [for the presidency]. He looked tonight like he had become the guy," said Frank McCaffrey, a Texas resident. "After the midterms, they’re gonna have to pass the torch to him, and he’s ready for it. He’s the next big thing. He is the big thing."

Jim Danner, another attendee, described Vance's speech as smooth and impactful, particularly praising his remarks on the importance of family. "I was amazed at how jazzed I felt after JD Vance. … That was the first speech I really think from him where I was like, wow, holy smokes," Danner said.

Vance also addressed a point of contention within the MAGA coalition: the war in Iran. He urged disaffected conservatives to avoid ceding the country to opposing political factions over policy disagreements. This comes as the war has caused divisions, particularly among anti-war conservatives who have historically aligned with figures like Tucker Carlson.

Rhonda Bellfort, a National Committeewoman from Illinois, expressed strong approval of Vance's performance, stating he "knocked it out of the ballpark" and has been "auditioning since day one."

Vance has frequently been polled as a potential frontrunner for the 2028 Republican presidential nomination. He has previously stated that he will not make a decision about running until after the midterm elections. Trump has also indicated it is too early to name an heir, though he has reportedly solicited opinions on Vance and Rubio as potential successors.
