Senator JD Vance has attributed the United States' record $40 trillion national debt to the Biden administration, stating that the debt had been growing faster than the nation's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) under current leadership. Vance made these remarks during an appearance on Newsmax.
"Even though the debt is too high, even though we inherited this debt bomb from the Biden administration, we actually do have a plan to get the economy growing faster than the debt," Vance said. He elaborated that the core issue has been the debt's expansion outpacing GDP growth.
The national debt reached the $40 trillion milestone recently, following its ascent to $38 trillion in October. The accumulation of national debt has occurred across multiple presidential terms, with both Democratic and Republican administrations contributing to its growth. According to a Reuters report, the U.S. debt increased by approximately $8.4 trillion during President Biden's term and rose by $11.6 trillion during former President Trump's two terms.
Vance also mentioned a "very discreet plan" from Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, asserting that the administration is aiming to accelerate U.S. economic growth to outpace the national debt. However, Vance's comments drew swift criticism on social media platforms, with many users expressing fatigue with what they perceive as a pattern of blaming the current administration for broader fiscal issues and pointing to the spending practices of previous administrations, including Trump's.
