Jazz Chisholm Jr. Returns to Yankees Amidst Infield Competition and Playoff Uncertainty

Jazz Chisholm Jr. made his return to the New York Yankees on Tuesday, starting at second base for the second game of a doubleheader against the Tampa Bay Rays. The Yankees ultimately lost the game 6-1, a result that saw the Rays clinch the division.

Chisholm, activated from the injured list after a two-week absence due to a sprained right thumb, went 1-for-3 with a walk in his first game back. However, his return was marked by a defensive miscue in the seventh inning. With runners on base and one out, Chisholm failed to cover first base on a safety squeeze attempt, a play manager Aaron Boone acknowledged the team had anticipated.

"He’s just gotta go [to first base] every time, and he knows that," Boone said after the game. Chisholm acknowledged the error, stating, "Next time, I’ll just keep going through."

Chisholm's return complicates the Yankees' infield situation as the team gears up for the playoffs with only five regular-season games remaining. Anthony Volpe, who had been starting at second base in Chisholm's absence, played the first game of the doubleheader and went 0-for-3 with three strikeouts. Entering Tuesday's games, Volpe had been hitting .286 with a .753 OPS in 10 games filling in for Chisholm.

The team also faces decisions at third base. Both José Caballero and Ryan McMahon have seen time at the position, with manager Aaron Boone aiming to provide them with regular repetitions. McMahon, who returned from a sprained thumb on September 1, has struggled offensively, hitting 6-for-40 with a .402 OPS. Amed Rosario, signed to play third base against left-handed pitchers, has also not produced in those situations this season.

To make room on the roster for Chisholm, Max Schuemann was optioned to the FCL Yankees. \n\nIn other injury news, pitcher Clarke Schmidt played catch on Tuesday after experiencing biceps cramping during Sunday's game. While the team awaits medical evaluations, a source indicated that Schmidt still felt discomfort, raising questions about his availability for the postseason roster. Pitchers Ryan Weathers and Fernando Cruz are also working back from injuries, with Weathers throwing a bullpen session and Cruz playing catch.

The Yankees have not yet announced their playoff rotation. Gerrit Cole is expected to start Wednesday, and he expressed confidence in any decision manager Boone makes regarding the postseason pitching order, including the possibility of another pitcher starting Game 1 of a wild-card series. Giancarlo Stanton continues to jog in the outfield as he recovers from his third calf strain of the season, with his return this year uncertain. The Yankees have secured at least 90 wins in eight of the last nine full seasons.
