Denver's acquisition of star wide receiver Jaylen Waddle did not yield immediate results in his debut, as the Broncos suffered a 31-10 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. Waddle, who arrived in Denver via trade and is in the remaining three years of an $84.75 million extension, recorded just one reception for two yards on three targets during the game.
Fellow pass-catcher Courtland Sutton also had a limited impact, finishing with two catches for 11 yards. The offensive struggles were centered around quarterback Bo Nix, who threw for 131 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Nix had been expected to improve this season with Waddle as his new top receiver, especially after leading the Broncos to the AFC's top seed the previous year before an injury ended his season.
Waddle was acquired from the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a 2026 first-round pick, a third-round pick, and two fourth-rounders. The Dolphins used these assets, along with other trades, to acquire players such as Chris Johnson, Chris Bell, and Trey Moore. While Miami appears satisfied with its return, Denver is still seeking to leverage Waddle's talent to bolster its offense.
The Broncos' performance on Monday night was a stark contrast to their previous season, where they were considered a potential Super Bowl contender before quarterback Nix's injury in the AFC Championship game against the Patriots.
