Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels has deflected further questions regarding his cease-and-desist letter to LSU concerning his former No. 5 jersey number. The move, aimed at preventing current Tigers cornerback DJ Pickett from wearing the number in the upcoming college season, has drawn significant attention and online commentary.
Daniels had previously stated that he viewed LSU's actions as "disrespectful." Following the issuance of the letter, a wave of social media trolling ensued, with various brands and individuals playfully referencing the dispute. The New York Mets, StubHub, and numerous social media users participated in the trend, posting their own versions of "respect" for the quarterback.
During a press conference on Wednesday after a joint practice with the Baltimore Ravens, Daniels was asked about the cease-and-desist letter and whether he had any additional statements. "I posted the statement on Instagram and said everything I needed to say. So, appreciate y'all," Daniels responded, indicating he would not elaborate further on the matter.
Daniels had previously expressed his focus on training camp and the upcoming season. In a statement, he noted his "gratitude for my time at LSU and I'm proud of what my teammates and I accomplished there." He also stated his hope that "issues to be worked out between my team and LSU and my hope is that it will get done privately," adding that he trusts the situation can be resolved. His "sole personal focus is on Commanders' football."
Daniels, who was the Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2024, led the Commanders to the NFC Championship Game. However, he participated in only seven games in his sophomore campaign in 2025 due to injuries, which prevented the team from returning to the playoffs.
