Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., suggested President Donald Trump's recent Republican convention ceremony, where he led attendees in a pledge to him, indicates he is "hitting the panic button." Jayapal stated on MS Now’s “The Assignment” that the president’s actions signal a recognition that his approval ratings are low and that Americans have lost faith in his promises.
During the convention, Trump asked his supporters to raise their right hands and recite a pledge of allegiance to him. He followed this by encouraging them to vote, even if it meant attempting to "cheat like hell."
Jayapal criticized the president for asking for a pledge of allegiance, describing it as dangerous for a leader who she claims prioritizes himself and his associates over the public. She asserted that Trump's actions demonstrate he is aware of his precarious political position, particularly as he faces backlash for unfulfilled campaign promises.
One such promise was that every American would receive $5,000 if Republicans won the midterm elections. Jayapal questioned the credibility of this and other promises, such as ending the war in Iran and lowering gas prices, asking why such actions had not already been taken if they were feasible.
Jayapal concluded that the next Republican nominee will need to choose between continued loyalty to Trump's base or representing the broader Republican electorate's desire for different policies. She reiterated her belief that Trump's actions stem from his awareness of being "in trouble."
