Jay-Z Dismisses Pressure Over Self-Selection for Super Bowl Halftime Show
The rapper, who oversees the NFL's musical halftime spectacle through his Roc Nation deal, stated he feels no added pressure performing himself.
Jay-Z is brushing off criticism and fan backlash following the announcement that he will headline the upcoming Super Bowl halftime show. The rapper, who has overseen the NFL's musical halftime spectacle since 2019 through a partnership with his Roc Nation company, confirmed he has selected himself for the high-profile performance at the end of the 2026 NFL season.
Despite speculation and some social media memes from fans, Jay-Z stated in a recent interview that he feels no pressure to deliver a standout performance. "It's the same as always," he said when asked about the pressure, indicating his preparation would remain consistent.
The selection was officially announced during halftime of the Monday night game between the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles. A short video clip shown during the broadcast featured the phrase "Goat's out of the bag" above an image of Jay-Z.
"From Reasonable Doubt to standing on the Super Bowl Halftime stage, this has been a journey," Jay-Z said in a statement. "Thirty years of music, work, and culture on the world's biggest stage. This run continues to be a dream come true."
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell welcomed Jay-Z's upcoming performance, noting that the arrangement had been years in the making. "When we first reached an agreement with Roc Nation to produce the show, I had just one request: that Jay-Z take the stage himself one day, whenever the moment felt right to him," Goodell stated. "I couldn't be more excited for fans around the world to experience the artistry, creativity and cultural impact he will bring to the Super Bowl stage."
Jay-Z and Roc Nation's deal with the NFL, initially a $5 million-a-year agreement in 2019, was renewed in 2024. Under this partnership, Jay-Z has previously selected artists such as Rihanna, Kendrick Lamar, and Bad Bunny to perform. His own performance is scheduled for Super Bowl LXI, which will take place at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on Valentine's Day.
While Jay-Z himself has never performed at the Super Bowl, his wife, Beyoncé, headlined the halftime show in 2013 and made guest appearances in 2016. Initial reports in September suggesting Jay-Z was considering himself for the role were reportedly denied by Roc Nation and the NFL at the time. Rumors had also circulated about other potential performers, including Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber, and Harry Styles.
