Jay-Z's concert at Yankee Stadium on Sunday night was delayed by more than three hours after a large group of individuals without tickets allegedly breached security, causing a temporary lockdown and significant disruption for ticketed attendees. The show, originally scheduled to begin at 8 p.m., did not start until 12:20 a.m., with performances concluding around 3 a.m.
Videos shared on social media depicted groups of people rushing through venue entrances, with some appearing to climb over others. Large crowds of ticket holders gathered outside the stadium during the lockdown, which prevented anyone from entering or leaving as officials worked to regain control. Gates were reportedly reopened around 10 p.m. under a "slow and methodical screening process," according to ABC7 sources. Security was heightened for the remainder of the evening, with officers stationed at every entrance.
Jay-Z apologized to the audience for the delay, explaining the situation: "There was like ten thousand people outside and they closed all the doors ‘cuz [people] rushed the door and I didn’t want to start music and have people get trampled." He expressed regret for the inconvenience before launching into his performance, which featured surprise guest appearances by Beyoncé, Rihanna, Usher, and Pharrell.
Authorities reported no arrests were made despite the chaotic crowd surge and prolonged delays. This incident occurred during Jay-Z's three-show engagement at the Bronx venue; the first two concerts proceeded without issue.
NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani stated that the city would investigate the security breach. "Last night is something that we're going to follow up on because I know that there were many New Yorkers who were delayed after there was a breach of security by those that didn't have tickets," Mamdani said in a press release. "It resulted in a multiple hour delay for many others, so that's something we'll follow up."
The New York Yankees, Roc Nation, and Live Nation released a joint statement acknowledging the incident. "On Sunday evening at various fan entrances at Yankee Stadium, hundreds of individuals in large groups — who did not have tickets to tonight’s performance — stormed over peaceful ticketholders, and in some cases, breached security," the statement read. "As a result, gates at all entrances of the Stadium were closed for an extended period of time." The statement also expressed gratitude to the NYPD and Yankee Stadium security personnel for their management of the situation, prioritizing attendee welfare.
