Javier Bardem Faces Criticism for Petition Against Pink's UNICEF Role

Actor Javier Bardem is facing criticism for advocating the removal of singer Pink as a UNICEF ambassador. Bardem shared multiple posts on Instagram Stories urging his followers to sign a Change.org petition titled “Remove Pink as a UNICEF Ambassador.” The petition contends that Pink’s public statements regarding the Israel-Gaza conflict are incompatible with her role and that UNICEF ambassadors should uphold humanitarian values above personal biases.

The move has drawn sharp reactions from fellow celebrities and social media users. Actor Michael Rapaport criticized Bardem, calling him a “tattletale” and accusing him of bullying a “proud Jewish woman.” Rapaport suggested that if Bardem had an issue with Pink’s statements, he should have addressed her directly rather than resorting to a petition.

Selma Blair also commented, questioning why anyone would seek to remove Pink from her UNICEF position for expressing “humble and loving words.” She suggested that Bardem should focus on his own life and allow “love to flow.”

Bardem’s petition initiative was reportedly prompted by Pink’s response to rapper Macklemore’s pro-Palestinian concert performance. Macklemore performed his song “Hind’s Hall” at MetLife Stadium, chanting “Free Palestine” while images related to Gaza were displayed. This performance drew criticism from accounts like @Stop_Antisemitism, which labeled it as “anti-Israel propaganda.”

Pink, who identified herself as Jewish, addressed the controversy on social media. She stated that her repost of the criticism was a reaction to Macklemore’s actions, not an opposition to the “Free Palestine” movement. She clarified that her comments in October 2023, which she stands by, condemned Hamas as a terrorist organization and called for a future for Palestinians that honors their humanity, emphasizing that protecting innocent life is paramount. Pink also mentioned her years of work with UNICEF and stated she was not asking for any artist to be silenced or fired.

She further explained her reaction to Macklemore, referencing a past incident where he performed in a costume perceived as antisemitic. Pink stated that Macklemore’s recent performance, which included violent imagery from the war and a dedication to a movement, alongside telling Jews in the audience that the message wasn't about them, prompted her repost. She asserted, “You don’t get to decide that for us.”

Macklemore later posted a video on Instagram acknowledging the audience and stating that performing on Ed Sheeran’s tour provided an opportunity to deliver his “Free Palestine” message. He captioned the video, “Wanting all humans to be treated equal should never be controversial.” Subsequently, Macklemore was removed from the tour after venues reportedly stated they would not allow a concert with him on the lineup.

Supporters of Bardem’s stance argued on the petition that Pink's comments were incompatible with UNICEF's mission and that the organization should not remain silent on the issues in Gaza. One commenter stated that if UNICEF did not remove Pink, then “the world is a much darker place.” Another argued that Pink was incapable of acknowledging the situation in Palestine and was therefore unfit to serve UNICEF.
