Jason Wilcox Faces Scrutiny Amid Manchester United's Struggles
Director of Football Jason Wilcox is under pressure from Manchester United fans due to the team's poor performance and transfer market decisions.
Manchester United's director of football, Jason Wilcox, is increasingly becoming the focus of fan dissatisfaction, as the club navigates a challenging period marked by poor results and questions surrounding transfer strategy.
Wilcox, a former Premier League winner with Blackburn Rovers, joined Manchester United in April 2024. He initially took on the role of technical director, having previously spent 15 months in a similar position at Manchester City, where he also led their academy. At City, he collaborated with current United CEO Omar Berrada and was later reunited with Stephen Torpey, who was appointed United's head of academy in August 2025.
Upon his arrival, United officials stated that Wilcox would oversee all technical aspects of the club to uphold "highest standards of performance," reporting to the sporting director. This structure shifted in December when the sporting director at the time, Dan Ashworth, was dismissed following disagreements over managerial appointments.
Nearly a year later, a series of subpar performances and concerns about transfer activity have placed Wilcox in a difficult position. Some observers note that Wilcox is not directly responsible for transfer budgets, which are determined at a higher level. He also had no control over key events that impacted the club's spending power, such as the injury sustained by Manuel Ugarte while playing for Uruguay in the World Cup, which had derailed plans to sell the midfielder in the summer to boost the transfer budget. Additionally, Barcelona's withdrawal from a £26 million deal to sign forward Marcus Rashford further constrained United's financial flexibility for both transfer fees and wages.
Wilcox maintains a low media profile, rarely granting interviews. A perceived lack of communication has left fans and observers questioning the club's decision to prioritize midfield reinforcements over addressing needs at left-back and securing additional striking options, particularly in light of injuries to key players in those positions.
The current manager, Michael Carrick, has faced significant criticism. While Carrick's popularity and legendary status at the club remain intact, the scrutiny is now shifting towards Wilcox, whose job title and public visibility, often seen with new signings and quoted in official club releases, make him a visible target for fan frustration.
Fans have openly expressed their desire for Wilcox's departure, but it remains unclear how club ownership views his position.
Wilcox has given only one in-depth interview since joining the club, speaking to the in-house podcast "Inside United" in October 2025. He also addressed attendees at the 40th-anniversary gala dinner of the club's past players' association a month prior. His public engagements with the media are limited, with only brief encounters with journalists observed in the past year.
Following a recent defeat to Bournemouth, Carrick was asked if Wilcox and Berrada should address supporters directly. Carrick deferred, stating, "It's not for me to say who speaks and who doesn't speak, when they speak, and how they speak. I know my role here is to speak to you guys and represent the team and football club as best as I possibly can from this position."
There has been no clear opportunity to directly question Wilcox about the scope and parameters of his role within the club's hierarchy.
