Jason Sudeikis on Olivia Wilde Split: 'I Could Have Communicated Better'
The 'Ted Lasso' star reflected on his nine-year relationship with the actress and director, stating that improved communication was his biggest takeaway.
Jason Sudeikis has shared what he considers the primary lesson learned from his nine-year relationship with ex-fiancée Olivia Wilde: the importance of direct communication.
In a recent episode of the podcast “Talk Easy with Sam Fragoso,” Sudeikis, 51, spoke candidly about his past relationship with Wilde, which spanned from 2011 to 2020. "I think it’s just flat-out communication," he stated when asked what he would have done differently. "I could have communicated better with how I felt, how things were making me feel [and] how things make me feel."
He elaborated that assuming a partner could be a "mind reader" was unfair. "Whether that person be a partner or a boss at ‘SNL’ or a line producer for a television show," Sudeikis added, "it’s, like, ‘How do you convey those ideas quicker?’"
The "Ted Lasso" star also reflected on how time impacts perspective on past relationships. He suggested that understanding a breakup takes about half the time the relationship lasted, implying that for their 10-year union, five years would provide significant clarity.
Sudeikis expressed admiration for Wilde's professional abilities, saying, "she’s ‘very good’ at her job." He continued, "I’m thrilled for her, and I feel very fortunate doing what I’m supposed to be doing. But going through all that has allowed me to see when other folks are going through something similar."
The couple, who met at a "Saturday Night Live" party, became engaged in 2013 and welcomed two children: son Otis Alexander in 2014 and daughter Daisy Josephine in 2016. They reportedly parted ways in 2020 and have focused on co-parenting.
