Jason Lee Ousted as Stockton Vice Mayor Amidst Political Turmoil

Stockton, California – Hollywood Unlocked founder Jason Lee has been removed from his position as vice mayor of Stockton, concluding months of contentious leadership clashes and political infighting within City Hall. The Stockton City Council voted 4-2 to strip Lee of his vice mayor title on Tuesday. He was also ousted from the city’s Audit Committee in a separate 6-1 vote.

Lee, who has a significant social media presence, announced on Instagram that he had resigned as vice mayor. However, reports indicate that Lee offered to step down before a formal vote, but a motion to accept his resignation failed. This paved the way for Mayor Christina Fugazi to propose his removal, a motion that subsequently passed. Lee reportedly left the meeting before the final vote occurred.

The leadership dispute is the latest development in ongoing tensions between Lee, Mayor Fugazi, and other city officials concerning financial oversight, governmental transparency, and allegations of misconduct. Mayor Fugazi stated that the decision was based on information revealed through a California Public Records Act request, which raised questions about Lee’s suitability for a position of financial authority.

Lee had previously questioned the council's legal authority to remove him from his vice mayor role, which was slated to expire at the end of the year. He had asserted that the City Charter provided for his appointment through December 31, 2026, and requested a written explanation from the City Attorney regarding the legal basis for any removal proceedings.

The conflict has been marked by several controversies, including disputes with law enforcement over record-keeping, heated arguments with city officials, and scrutiny of city payments for a comedy event featuring Lee. Lee had also accused city leaders of attempting to silence him, particularly after he was prevented from participating in meetings remotely.

Despite his removal as vice mayor and from the Audit Committee, Lee will continue to serve as an elected City Council member representing Stockton's District 6.

The internal strife has drawn attention from a civil grand jury, which has issued criticism regarding the council's infighting and its treatment of city employees. Councilmember Michelle Padilla characterized the leadership change as a "charade," and some residents expressed concern that the removal of Lee from committee assignments could impact representation for constituents in District 6.
