Jason Kelce Briefly Revives Redskins Name, Draws Immediate Correction
The former Eagles center, now an NFL Network analyst, quickly apologized after using the team's former name.
During his work as a booth analyst for NFL Network, Jason Kelce referred to the Washington Commanders by their former name, the Redskins. The slip-up occurred Sunday afternoon during the Commanders' game against the Indianapolis Colts.
Play-by-play announcer Dave Pasch immediately corrected Kelce, stating, "Commanders. You did it." Kelce responded with surprise, "What'd I do?" Upon learning he had used the former team name, Kelce exclaimed, "Oh, my gosh! I almost made it out."
Pasch revealed that he, Kelce, and fellow analyst Kurt Warner had apparently made a bet before the broadcast about who would be the first to inadvertently use the Redskins name. "Yeah, the three of us had a little gentleman's bet who would be first," Pasch said.
Kelce, who retired from the Philadelphia Eagles after a 13-year career, is relatively new to his broadcasting role and is still settling in. While he has proven adept at analyzing offensive line play, the transition to general booth analysis is ongoing.
The Washington Redskins officially changed their name to the Washington Football Team in 2020, and then to the Commanders in 2022, following public outcry over the previous name, which was considered by many to be a racial slur. The debate over the name change has been divisive, with some Native American groups and individuals disagreeing on whether the term is offensive. The team's current owner, Josh Harris, has indicated he is not in favor of reverting to the previous nickname.
Despite the official change, the Redskins name and its history remain a significant part of the team's legacy for many long-time fans and former players.
