Jason Alexander Details Therapy Use to Cope with "Seinfeld" Fame

Jason Alexander, known for his role as George Costanza on the hit sitcom "Seinfeld," revealed that he utilized therapy to manage the overwhelming impact of his newfound fame.

During an appearance on the "Build or Break" podcast hosted by Daniel Lubetzky, Alexander stated that he was in therapy during the show's run. He explained that the shift from being successful in his profession to becoming an international celebrity was a significant adjustment that required professional guidance.

"The transition from successful at your job to international celebrity, let me just tell you, I don't care how well you've been raised or who you are, you're going to need some therapy," Alexander said.

Alexander shared that his early aspirations as an actor were focused on achieving success on Broadway, a dream he fulfilled early in his career, even earning a Tony Award by age 30. The unexpected trajectory of his career, which included television and film roles beyond his initial vision, brought him a level of success and financial stability he never anticipated.

"I didn't think about television. I didn't think about film. I dreamt about a life in the theater," he recalled. "God gave me that starting at age 21. By the time I was 30, I'd won a Tony Award. And now they throw in my path 'Pretty Woman,' some of the other films, 'Seinfeld.' And I now live a life as an actor that I never dreamt of, never."

He reflected on the nature of success in television during "Seinfeld's" era, noting that a hit series often meant a long period of guaranteed work. "One of the reasons that we were so adamant at the end about making money on 'Seinfeld' is because I grew up at a time when if you had a hit series on television, you never worked again. I mean, that was it."

"Seinfeld," co-created by Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David, premiered in 1989 and ran for nine seasons, concluding in 1998. The series followed a fictionalized version of Jerry Seinfeld and his friends in New York City, becoming one of television's most acclaimed and influential sitcoms. The main cast also included Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Elaine Benes and Michael Richards as Cosmo Kramer.
