Japanese PM Sparks Debate on Workload and Gender Roles

Japan's first female prime minister, Sanae Takaichi, has ignited a public discussion after stating she works longer hours than her male predecessors due to domestic responsibilities and the time required for applying makeup. The 65-year-old politician suggested that performing housework, preparing breakfast, doing dishes, and then applying makeup adds three to four hours to her day compared to male prime ministers.

Takaichi's aides reportedly took time to understand her need for extra preparation before television appearances. Her remarks have drawn criticism for potentially reinforcing traditional gender roles and perpetuating the issue of excessive working hours, which are deeply ingrained in Japanese work culture. In Japan, women continue to bear the primary responsibility for domestic duties and childcare, even while working.

Takaichi, who has no biological children, adopted her husband's three children from a previous marriage. Social media users have pointed out that many working women face even greater demands. One widely shared comment noted that while Takaichi's need for extra time might be acceptable if her work is completed, seeking leniency specifically because of the time spent on makeup is problematic.
