Japanese Grocery Chain Hashi Market Opens First West Coast Store
The new Cupertino location offers a wide array of Japanese snacks, premium seafood, and a daily sushi discount.
Hashi Market, a Japanese supermarket chain originating from New York City, is expanding to the West Coast with its inaugural store opening in Cupertino, California, on Friday, October 9. The 20,000-square-foot establishment, located at 20558 Stevens Creek Blvd. in a former Sprouts, will feature imported snacks, high-quality seafood, luxury fruits, and a variety of prepared foods.
Operating daily from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., the store introduces a special promotion for late-night shoppers: all sushi items will be available at a 30% discount after 8 p.m. Beyond sushi, the market's offerings include bento boxes, onigiri, teriyaki skewers, katsu curry, baked salmon, and housemade breads and pastries. Customers can also find Japanese cosmetics, home goods, and pop-culture merchandise.
Hashi Market's operations director, Justin Li, described the store's ambiance as akin to a "younger store, like an Erewhon," referencing the upscale Los Angeles-based grocer known for its trendy products. Li highlighted the Hokkaido section as a personal favorite, featuring treats from the northern Japanese island, including ROYCE Chocolate.
Cupertino was strategically chosen due to its affluent population with a strong affinity for Japanese cuisine, a demographic that Hashi Market aims to serve. The area also sees competition from other recently opened Asian grocery stores, such as Tokyo Central in Emeryville, H Mart in Dublin, and T&T Market in San Jose.
Founded in 2024, Hashi Market has rapidly grown to six locations in New York City. The company has ambitious expansion plans, intending to open an additional 10 stores by early 2027 in states including Colorado, Massachusetts, and Washington.
The grand opening event on Friday will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony and weekend giveaways for early visitors.
