Japanese Baseball Star Teruaki Sato Posted for MLB Free Agency

Third baseman Teruaki Sato, a significant free agent target this winter, has been officially posted by Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball's Hanshin Tigers, opening a 45-day window for Major League Baseball teams to negotiate a contract.

Sato, 27, is coming off a remarkable season where he achieved the Japanese triple crown, batting .306 with 39 home runs and 106 RBIs. This accomplishment made him the ninth player in NPB history to win the triple crown and the first Tigers player since Randy Bass in 1986. His performance in 2026 followed a 2025 season where he hit 40 home runs and recorded 102 RBIs, earning him the Central League MVP award.

Sato, who stands 6-foot-1 and weighs 207 pounds, primarily plays third base but also made an appearance in right field for Samurai Japan during the 2026 World Baseball Classic. Like fellow NPB star Munetaka Murakami, Sato may transition to first base in MLB.

Tigers general manager Satoshi Shimamura confirmed the club's decision to make Sato available through the posting system. "I am grateful to the team for respecting my wishes," Sato said in a statement. "I truly enjoyed the days I spent with my teammates while playing for the Tigers, and I am sincerely grateful for the warm support from the fans. I ask for your continued support."

He is expected to travel to the United States in November to meet with interested MLB teams. The timeline for his potential move to the majors comes as MLB's collective bargaining agreement is set to expire on December 1, potentially leading to a lockout.

Both New York MLB teams are reportedly interested in acquiring Sato. The Mets view him as a potential first base solution following Pete Alonso's departure and inconsistent performance at the position in 2026. The Yankees are also exploring Sato as an option for third base.

Other teams expected to show interest include the Philadelphia Phillies and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
