Japan Protests Russian Arrest of Journalist on Espionage Charges
Tokyo demands explanation, consular access, and humane treatment for a journalist detained in Russia.
Japan has lodged a formal protest with Russia concerning the arrest of a Japanese journalist on suspicion of espionage, urging Moscow to provide an explanation, grant consular access, and ensure the journalist receives humane treatment.
The journalist, who works for the Hokkaido Shimbun newspaper, was arrested on Sakhalin Island by Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB). The FSB stated the individual is suspected of gathering information on Russia's defense capabilities for a Japanese intelligence agency. The journalist was reportedly apprehended as they were preparing to depart Russia and was on a valid journalist visa.
The arrest marks a recent escalation in tensions between Japan and Russia. Relations have been strained, particularly following Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit in August to Iturup, one of the four disputed Kuril Islands claimed by Japan. The Soviet Union seized the islands from Japan in the final days of World War II, and the ongoing territorial dispute has prevented the two nations from formally concluding hostilities with a peace treaty.
Japan's Foreign Ministry summoned Russian Ambassador Nikolay Nozdrev to convey Tokyo's protest and demand an explanation. Kimitake Nakamura, head of the European Affairs Bureau at Japan's Foreign Ministry, also requested that Japanese officials be allowed to contact the detained journalist and reiterated Japan's territorial claims over the Kuril Islands, which Tokyo refers to as the Northern Territories.
Earlier, Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara expressed concern over the journalist's well-being, citing the inability of Japanese officials to contact him. He assured that Japan would "do everything we can for the protection of the Japanese citizen" while acknowledging the need for communication between the two neighboring countries.
In related actions, Tokyo has imposed additional economic sanctions on Moscow in response to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The Russian region of Sakhalin encompasses Sakhalin Island and the southernmost islands of the Kuril chain, which are under Moscow's control but claimed by Japan.
