Jane Seymour Reveals She and 'Dr. Quinn' Co-Star Joe Lando "Really Fell in Love"

Jane Seymour has revealed that she and her "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman" co-star Joe Lando shared a real-life romance during the show's original run, admitting they "really fell in love." The 75-year-old actress made the confession during a panel at 90s Con, where she discussed her relationship with Lando, 64, who played Byron Sully opposite her Dr. Michaela "Mike" Quinn from 1993 to 1998.

"That's a secret," Seymour reportedly said during the panel, before adding, "it's not a secret anymore." She explained that the romance began early in filming, recalling an incident where Lando drove her to avoid a flash flood, leading to a shared meal and drinks.

"It took us, like, $5, and then we realized that, you know, we had actually fallen in love," Seymour stated. "So everything you saw on ‘Dr. Quinn,’ certainly in the pilot, [was real]." However, the relationship was short-lived. Seymour noted that she and Lando parted ways because Lando had specific life plans that included starting a family.

At the time, Seymour was already a mother to two children, Katherine and Sean, from her previous marriage to David Flynn. She later had twins, John and Kristopher, with ex-husband James Keach. Lando went on to marry Kirsten Barlow in 1997, and the couple had four children: Jack, Christian, Kate, and William.

Seymour reflected that the brief romance contributed to the on-screen chemistry between their characters. "We didn’t actually talk to each other, other than in dialogue or making out for about six or seven years," she said of the experience, which she described as "difficult" and "tough." "We, obviously, clearly loved one another and realized we couldn’t be actually in real-life together. I think we just played it [off] as Michaela and Sully."

The series concluded with two TV movies in 1999 and 2001. Seymour and Lando have maintained a friendship, with Lando attending Seymour's 75th birthday celebration earlier this year. In 2025, Seymour reportedly offered shelter to Lando and his family at her Malibu home during the Los Angeles wildfires.

"[She] allowed us to come over to her house and opened it up for us without any hesitation and, thank God, gave us someplace to come and sleep," Lando said of Seymour in a social media post at the time.

Seymour and Lando last collaborated on the 2022 Lifetime movie "A Christmas Spark."
