Jane Haining, a missionary from Scotland who sheltered Jewish girls during the Holocaust, has been posthumously honored at Auschwitz. Haining, who was the matron at a Church of Scotland school in Budapest from 1932 to 1944, is recognized for her efforts in protecting approximately 400 pupils, both Jewish and Christian, aged six to 16.
Despite numerous opportunities to return to her native Scotland after the war began in 1939, Haining chose to remain with her students. Her commitment was famously articulated in her own words: "If these children need me in days of sunshine, how much more do they need me in days of darkness?"
Her courageous stance came to an end in April 1944 when she was arrested by German officers. The following month, she was transported to the Auschwitz concentration camp.
