Jane Green, a novelist, has shared her experience of looking and feeling older during her marriage's decline and how she has since discovered a sense of revitalization in her fifties. At 58, Green describes feeling as though she has reversed the aging process by making significant personal changes after her divorce.

Three years prior to her current state, Green, then married, attended a friend's wedding. Reflecting on photographs from that event, she noted a stark contrast to her present appearance. She described her hair as salt-and-pepper gray, her style as uninspired, and her overall look as "frumpy, dumpy and old." More importantly, she felt a profound sadness, a lack of "light in my eyes," and a general sense of invisibility.

Green attributed this decline to the strains of an 18-year marriage that had become increasingly difficult. She described feeling a sense of quiet desperation and a loss of self, leading her to withdraw from life. This period was marked by early nights and a lack of purpose, a stark contrast to her current outlook.

A Shift in Perspective

Her perspective began to shift around her 50th birthday. Looking in the mirror, she posed the question: "who would you be if you stopped caring what anyone thought about you?" This introspection marked a turning point in her pursuit of peace.

The marriage's challenges intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic. Financial stresses and the feeling of carrying the sole financial burden led to resentment, creating a chasm between Green and her husband. Her husband pursued a master's degree in psychotherapy, while Green continued to manage the household finances and felt her creativity stifled. This led to a growing emotional distance and mutual resentment.

By New Year's Eve 2023, a recurring argument about finances, his mother, and their marriage culminated in a rupture rather than reconciliation. This moment signaled the end of their relationship, a devastating realization for both. Shortly after, Green traveled to Marrakesh, a place she had previously found invigorating, and did not return, spending the next year and a half learning to become self-reliant.

Rediscovering Herself

Green advocates against labeling women who leave long-term relationships at this stage as experiencing a "midlife crisis," arguing such a view is "lazy and reductive." She asserts that women often make such drastic changes only when they feel they have no other recourse.

Her process of "rewilding" began with her appearance. She decided to dye her hair back to its natural brunette color, a change that immediately made her feel younger and more recognizable to herself. Following this, she reassessed her wardrobe, moving away from trying to conform to trends and instead embracing a style that felt authentic to her, influenced by the late 1960s and early 1970s, characterized by bell-bottom jeans and bold accessories. She emphasized dressing for herself rather than for external approval.

Finding Contentment

The period following her separation was described as a rollercoaster, with days of fear and days of optimism. Over time, she found greater clarity, calmness, and significantly more energy than she had experienced in years. She believes this rejuvenation stems not from drastic beauty regimen changes, but from genuine happiness, self-trust, and self-liking.

Intensive therapy helped Green become comfortable with her current self. She described the transformation from an introverted individual to someone who embraces social interaction. In Marrakesh, she has cultivated a diverse circle of friends of various ages and has begun exploring the dating scene, noting that younger men are sometimes drawn to older women for their confidence and self-assurance.

Green stated she has no shame about her age and appreciates the comfort and wisdom that comes with it. She distinguishes between "loneliness," a hollow ache of not being seen, and "aloneness," a quiet fullness of appreciating one's own company. While acknowledging that aloneness can be overwhelming, she prefers it to being surrounded by the wrong people.

While she does not rule out the possibility of remarrying, Green is focused on rebuilding her career and nurturing her relationship with herself. She believes that when individuals are content and secure in themselves, it radiates outward, fostering positive connections with others. Green concluded by stating that at 57, by embracing her true self, she feels she is working her way back to a youthful spirit. (IMAGE2) (IMAGE5) (IMAGE3) (IMAGE4)
