Jamie Carragher Calls for Florian Wirtz's Bench Role After Bournemouth Performance

Jamie Carragher, a prominent figure in football punditry, has asserted that Liverpool's £116 million attacker, Florian Wirtz, should be removed from the team's starting lineup. This call comes in the wake of Wirtz's performance during Liverpool's match against Bournemouth, which Carragher characterized as one of his "poorest" showings since joining the club from Bayer Leverkusen.

Carragher voiced his strong opinion on the new Jamie Carragher Podcast, expressing significant disappointment with Wirtz's impact on the south coast. "That was one of the poorest I've ever seen him in a Liverpool shirt," Carragher stated. He further elaborated that while Wirtz is typically neat and tidy and capable of retaining possession, his recent display lacked the expected influence.

"I've been critical of the fact that he hasn't got the numbers. But normally when you watch Wirtz, he's neat and tidy, he keeps possession, there's things that you like. He gets out of a tight situation where you're normally expecting your player to lose the ball," Carragher noted. However, he expressed a deeper concern: "I don't think Wirtz is in poor form since he came to Liverpool. I actually think what we're seeing is what he is."

Carragher suggested that the gap between expectations for Wirtz and his current output is too substantial to overcome. "The gap he's got to get to almost justify what people were expecting, I almost think is too big. You can't get there," he commented. "Even if he improves a bit and gets there, it's still not what Liverpool thought they were getting."

The pundit also highlighted the knock-on effect Wirtz's inclusion has on other players, specifically mentioning Dominik Szoboszlai. "When he plays at No 10, it means Dominik Szoboszlai has to play central midfield. I don't think Szoboszlai is a central-midfield player, I don't," Carragher added.

Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola faces a decision regarding Wirtz's place in the squad ahead of the team's return to action against Manchester City on October 11, following a three-week international break. Carragher is adamant about his proposed course of action: "I think going forward Iraola's got a decision to make here. Wirtz would not be in my Liverpool team."

He emphasized the significance of the Bournemouth match for Wirtz, particularly given the upcoming break. "I thought this Bournemouth game was a big game for Wirtz. Because if he doesn't produce [against Bournemouth], he's then going to have a three-week break," Carragher said. "By the time we come back, we're into October. Before you know it, it'll be Christmas in six to eight weeks, or it'll feel like we're getting to Christmas. He has to do something!"

Concluding his assessment, Carragher reiterated his strong stance: "Wirtz wouldn't be in my Liverpool team. Manchester City at home, for me, he can't be in the team."
