Jamie Carragher Backs Michael Carrick Amidst Manchester United's Struggles

Jamie Carragher has advised Manchester United to retain manager Michael Carrick, suggesting the club needs stability during their current difficult period. Despite Manchester United's joint-worst start to a Premier League season, accumulating only five points from their first five matches and displaying concerning performances, Carragher believes Carrick should be allowed the full season to restore calm before a potential managerial change.

Carragher, speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, stated, "I think it would be ludicrous to get rid of Michael Carrick." He views Carrick not as a long-term managerial solution, but as a figure brought in to navigate the club through a turbulent phase. "I almost feel like he's in there doing a job for the club to get them through a rocky period and then passing the baton on," Carragher explained.

He emphasized Carrick's role in bringing stability after a period of perceived chaos. "He came in, and Manchester United needed calm, they needed not being a circus, not being a banter club," Carragher said. He also noted Carrick's success in securing Champions League qualification last season, a crucial achievement for the club's financial standing and aspirations.

"His results have been unbelievable since he's come into the job over the long period. He got the job on the back of that. The fact he got them in the Champions League brings the money," Carragher added. "Manchester United need to be a Champions League club again. It's not about, wow, we're going to win the league this year. They need another season of just making sure you get the Champions League, and then it'd be a case of bringing in one of the top managers about who could manage a club at that level."

Carragher concluded, "I don't think the idea of changing Michael Carrick now or at the next international break makes sense. It just needs to be relaxed, just let him get on with it."

Carrick's tenure has seen 14 wins in 24 matches, with five draws and five losses. He guided the team to third place in the league last term. However, the team has recently faced significant setbacks, including losses to rivals Manchester City and Brighton, and a draw against Fulham where they conceded a late equalizer. Despite 25 shots in the Fulham match, the team struggled to convert chances, prompting criticism from former teammate Gary Neville.

Neville described the team's effort in certain periods as "disgraceful" and a "lack of effort," noting a tendency for players to "amble around the pitch." He also stated, "Michael (Carrick) needs to stop defending them." Matheus Cunha, who scored United's late equalizer against Fulham, acknowledged that the team only increased their energy after conceding, a sentiment he feels is unacceptable.
