James Watt Discusses Autism's Impact on Relationships

James Watt, 44, has spoken about how his autism diagnosis, received at age 40, presents challenges in his relationship with wife Georgia Toffolo, particularly in his tendency to miss emotional cues. Watt, who also has ADHD, described his brain as being "wired differently."

In a LinkedIn post, Watt detailed how his logical approach to decision-making, less influenced by emotional validation, has been an advantage in business. He explained that this wiring allows him to take risks and push boundaries without excessive concern for consensus, which he found beneficial in building his ventures.

However, he noted that the "flip side" of this neurological wiring can create difficulties in personal relationships and leadership. Watt elaborated that he can "move too quickly into problem-solving" and sometimes removes the emotional depth from situations that require it, stating that this is an area he continues to work on. He advised others to "learn how to wield" their unique wiring, as it can become a significant strength.

Watt was diagnosed with Asperger syndrome and ADHD in 2024. He previously told The Times that the diagnoses helped him realize his distinct cognitive style, leading to a lesser concern for others' opinions and a greater willingness to take risks. He acknowledged that his "intense and demanding" nature might not be conducive to everyone's comfort.

Watt stepped down as CEO of BrewDog after 17 years to transition into a "captain and co-founder" role. In this new capacity, he remains on the board and serves as a part-time strategic advisor. James Arrow has taken over as chief executive to guide the company into its next growth phase.

Watt, who comes from a family of fishermen and is a qualified deep-sea captain, co-founded BrewDog with Martin Dickie in 2007. The brewery gained national recognition after a Tesco order for its beer. Watt was recognized as Great British Entrepreneur of the Year in 2014, and both he and Dickie were awarded MBEs in 2016.
