Singer-songwriter James Taylor revealed he was invited to the wedding of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce but had to decline due to a long-standing personal tradition. The July 3 celebration, held at Madison Square Garden, brought together stars from music, film, and sports.

Taylor, 78, announced during a performance at the Tanglewood Music Festival in Lenox, Massachusetts, that he and his wife Kim had received an invitation. However, he explained to the audience that he could not attend because he has performed at the Tanglewood festival every Fourth of July weekend for the past 52 consecutive years, a streak he began in 1974.

Despite his inability to attend, Taylor conveyed his well wishes to the newlyweds, hoping for "happiness and smooth sailing" in their marriage.

Swift's connection to the "Carolina In My Mind" singer dates back to before her birth, as her parents named her Taylor. In a 2024 interview with USA Today, Taylor recalled meeting a teenage Swift at a benefit event approximately 15 years prior, where she shared that her parents had chosen her name with him in mind. Taylor, accompanied by his wife and a cellist, performed songs while Swift, then a teen, played solo.

Swift has often expressed her admiration for Taylor. In 2011, during a concert at Madison Square Garden, she shared with the audience how she learned of her name's origin. She recounted telling her mother that the only song she enjoyed singing in chorus class was Taylor's "Fire and Rain." Her mother then revealed that she was named after the artist. Following this revelation, Taylor made a surprise appearance at Swift's concert to perform "Fire and Rain" as a duet with the pop superstar.

Another notable figure, television host Ryan Seacrest, also disclosed his inability to attend the wedding despite having initially RSVP'd. Seacrest explained on his radio show that he had committed to hosting Disney's "Let Freedom Sing! Music City July 4th" special in Nashville, which conflicted with the wedding date. He stated he had confirmed his attendance twice with Swift and Kelce but ultimately could not be in two places at once, as his hosting gig spanned July 3 and 4.

Seacrest also shared a serendipitous encounter with Swift and Kelce at a restaurant after he had sent his RSVP. During their conversation, Swift expressed her excitement for the wedding, describing it as something that would be "so much fun" and "go late." It was during this meeting that Seacrest met Travis Kelce for the first time, noting he was seated in the booth next to theirs.

Seacrest had previously offered to officiate Swift and Kelce's wedding during an appearance Swift made on his radio show in October, after the couple's engagement announcement. He mentioned that he had recently completed an online course allowing him to officiate weddings. Swift responded with appreciation for the offer. She did, however, avoid revealing the specific wedding date when Seacrest inquired.
