Veteran actor James Sloyan died on July 22 at his home in Sherman Oaks, California, at the age of 85. His career, which spanned six decades, included numerous roles in television, film, and commercials.
Sloyan was widely recognized for his multiple appearances in the Star Trek franchise. He first appeared in a 1990 episode of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and later featured in "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," another "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode, and "Star Trek: Voyager."
Film credits for Sloyan include the 1973 hit "The Sting," where he played mobster Mottola, working under the crime boss Doyle Lonnegan, portrayed by Robert Shaw. He also appeared in the 1980 musical fantasy film "Xanadu" as Simpson, the boss of Sonny Malone, played by Michael Beck.
His television work extended to guest roles on popular series such as "Hawaii Five-O," "Growing Pains," "MacGyver," "Baywatch," and "The X-Files."
In addition to his on-screen work, Sloyan was the voice of Lexus in commercials for the car brand for two decades.
Born in Indianapolis in 1941, Sloyan graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. After serving three years in the U.S. Army, he began his acting career with the New York Shakespeare Festival, working as both an actor and fight choreographer. He made his Broadway debut in Arthur Kopit's "Indians" in 1969.
Sloyan is survived by his partner of six decades, Deirdre Lenihan, and their children, Daniel and Samantha. He was the brother of the late Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Patrick Sloyan, who died in 2019 at age 82.
