Actor James Norton has shared an account of a near-fainting episode at a 2024 GQ dinner, an event that caused unexpected disruption due to his type 1 diabetes. Norton, who was diagnosed with the condition at age 22, explained on the "Table Manners" podcast that the incident occurred after he administered his insulin without realizing his starter meal lacked sufficient carbohydrates.

Norton, seated at a high table alongside notable figures like Jude Law and Nicole Kidman, began to feel unwell as speeches commenced. He described experiencing symptoms of a hypoglycemic event, including sweating and a feeling of weakness. Concerned about fainting, he discreetly sought assistance from a server, requesting immediate food. He was given a chocolate bar and juice, which he believed would stabilize his condition.

However, unbeknownst to him, his discreet request had triggered a more significant response behind the scenes. Staff, alerted to his diabetic state, initiated efforts to assist him, leading to a moment of public surprise. In the middle of Nicole Kidman's speech, a plate of potatoes was brought to Norton, an action he perceived as a stark, almost comical, interruption.

Norton, 41, regularly manages his type 1 diabetes with a continuous glucose monitor and daily insulin doses. He has previously spoken about the challenges of managing his condition in professional settings. He recalled instances where he had to create hidden pockets in costumes to carry sugar tablets and described a past theatrical experience in 2011 where a co-star mistook his adrenaline-induced shaking on stage for diabetic shock, leading to a similarly chaotic scene with offers of drinks and biscuits.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease where the body produces insufficient insulin, leading to elevated blood glucose levels. Management typically involves daily insulin injections to maintain stable blood sugar. The condition is not linked to age or weight, factors more commonly associated with type 2 diabetes.
