James McClean Slams Derry City Over Contract Termination Attempt
Footballer calls club's bid to void his deal 'incomprehensible' and a 'dangerous precedent' amid fitness dispute.
Footballer James McClean has publicly criticized his hometown club, Derry City, for attempting to terminate his contract, labeling the move "incomprehensible" and a "dangerous precedent." The 37-year-old player, who signed a multi-year deal with the club in January, stated that Derry City sought to void his contract in August, reportedly claiming he was not fit enough to play or train.
McClean, who previously played for Wrexham, expressed his deep disappointment in a statement released on the PFA Ireland website. He acknowledged that some of his actions in recent months were misjudged and apologized for any frustration he caused, stating he wished to keep his issues in-house. He asserted his commitment to his hometown club and its values.
"When I agreed to come home from Wrexham, I did so in good faith, based on commitments made to me both playing wise and regarding my future after football," McClean said. "I uprooted my family midway through the school year because I believed in the vision presented to me, both for the short term and the long term."
He added that he felt his opinions were not well-received when he tried to help professionalize the club and drive standards. While accepting accountability for his own missteps and performances, McClean stated he cannot understand or accept how he has been treated.
"For any club to feel it is OK to attempt to terminate a player's contract without any due process or just cause is incomprehensible, and it sets a dangerous precedent for every player in this league," he said.
McClean, who is approaching 37, acknowledged that players his age may experience occasional injury issues and has been open about his physical challenges. However, he vehemently denies being "permanently incapacitated" or anything close to it, asserting his capability to contribute and perform in the League of Ireland. He emphasized his dedication to training and declared that he alone will decide when to retire.
"I deserve the same duty of care and fairness given to the majority of other players at Derry City FC. I am ready to play when called upon," McClean stated.
Derry City currently sits fourth in the League of Ireland Premier Division. This follows a disappointing campaign after finishing as runners-up in 2023 and 2025.
McClean has frequently been in the headlines for his stance on not wearing a poppy, a position he adopted during his time playing for English clubs. He has explained that his refusal stems from the poppy's association with British soldiers involved in conflicts and atrocities in Ireland, specifically referencing Bloody Sunday in 1972. He has previously stated that while he respects differing beliefs, he would never compromise his own convictions and has faced abuse and death threats for his stance.
In June, McClean alluded to his dissatisfaction with his return to Ireland after a 15-year career in English football, noting a disconnect between expectations and reality. He has won 103 caps for the Republic of Ireland, having previously represented Northern Ireland at the Under-21 level. He has recounted instances of receiving death threats and bullets in the post due to his poppy protest.
