James McClean's Contract Terminated by Derry City Amid Contract Dispute
Footballer James McClean and Derry City have mutually agreed to terminate his contract, ending a dispute that began when the club attempted to terminate his deal over alleged incapacitation.
The contract dispute between footballer James McClean and his boyhood club, Derry City, has concluded with a mutual agreement to terminate his contract. The resolution brings an end to a tumultuous period that saw the Republic of Ireland international's return to the club marred by conflict.
Derry City had reportedly attempted to terminate McClean's contract in August, less than a year after signing him on a multi-year deal in January. The club's grounds for termination were based on claims that McClean was unfit to fulfill his contractual obligations due to alleged physical incapacitation. McClean, however, refuted these claims, describing the club's actions as "incomprehensible" and a "dangerous precedent."
McClean stated that he had agreed to return to Derry City in good faith, based on commitments made regarding his playing future and post-football career. He acknowledged that some of his actions in recent months were misjudged and that his frustrations should have been handled internally, apologizing for any perceived missteps. However, he maintained that he could not understand or accept the treatment he received, emphasizing that any attempt to terminate a player's contract without due process or just cause is unacceptable and sets a dangerous precedent for players in the league.
McClean had not been included in a matchday squad since July, indicating a significant souring of relations between the player and the club. Despite the difficult circumstances, McClean expressed that Derry City FC will always hold a special place in his heart and wished the team well for the remainder of the season, including their FAI Cup Final against Waterford FC.
Derry City chairman Philip O’Doherty acknowledged McClean's dedication and his significant contributions to Irish football, highlighting his 103 senior caps for the Republic of Ireland as a remarkable milestone. Both parties have agreed not to make further comments on the matter.
McClean has previously been a prominent figure due to his refusal to wear a poppy during Remembrance weekend, a stance he has maintained since 2012. He has explained that his objection stems from the poppy's association with historical British military actions in Ireland, particularly Bloody Sunday in his hometown. McClean has stated that while he respects the beliefs of others, he cannot compromise his own convictions. This stance has led to him receiving abuse and even death threats throughout his career.
