James Hetfield Criticizes Performers for Political Agendas on Stage

Metallica frontman James Hetfield recently voiced his disapproval of entertainers who use their concerts to promote political messages. During a performance at the Las Vegas Sphere, Hetfield addressed the audience, emphasizing that Metallica's focus is on connecting with fans through music, not influencing their political views.

"I just gotta say, Metallica is not here, like some other entertainers, to influence you with their bulls---, OK?" Hetfield stated, drawing cheers from the crowd. He added, "We are here …no bulls--- …we're here to forget about all the outside s---, OK? Metallica's agenda is love, energy and heavy music, baby!"

Hetfield's remarks come as other artists have faced repercussions for their political stances. Rapper Macklemore was removed from opening slots on Ed Sheeran's tour after expressing pro-Palestinian sentiments and performing a song critical of Israel's actions in Gaza. This led to a chain reaction, with Sheeran's other supporting acts withdrawing in solidarity.

Sheeran himself has stated that he is not responsible for Macklemore's removal, attributing the decision to promoters and venues. The pop star has also expressed that his concerts are intended for a diverse audience, including children, who do not expect a political forum. He previously called the conflict in Gaza "catastrophic and unjustifiable" while acknowledging the "horrific" Hamas-led attacks on Israel.

Macklemore pledged to donate $1 million earned from opening for Sheeran to Palestinian aid organizations and announced a series of "Free Palestine Tour" dates. Meanwhile, country singer Zach Bryan wore a "Free Palestine" t-shirt during his concerts at Gillette Stadium.

Hetfield has a long-standing aversion to mixing music and politics. In previous interviews, he has explained that Metallica deliberately avoids divisive topics to foster connection with their audience rather than alienate them. He stated in 2016 that such political views "don't do that as much as music does" and that his goal is to "connect them with music."

Metallica is currently in the midst of a residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas, with dates scheduled through March 2027.
