James Hetfield Criticizes Musicians for Injecting Politics into Concerts
Metallica frontman James Hetfield stated that his band's agenda is "love, energy and heavy music," contrasting with artists who use performances for political statements.

Metallica frontman James Hetfield has voiced his disapproval of performers who use their concerts as a platform for political agendas. During a recent show at the Las Vegas Sphere, Hetfield expressed gratitude to fans for attending and emphasized that Metallica's purpose is to provide an escape from outside distractions.
"We are here ... no bulls— … we’re here to forget about all the outside s—, OK?," Hetfield told the audience, who responded with cheers. "Metallica’s agenda is love, energy and heavy music, baby!"
While Hetfield did not name specific artists, his remarks come amidst a backdrop of musicians incorporating political messages into their performances. Rapper Macklemore was reportedly removed from remaining dates on Ed Sheeran's "Loop Tour" after repeatedly advocating for "Free Palestine" and performing a pro-Palestinian song. Sheeran, who organized the tour, stated that promoters and venues made the decision regarding Macklemore's removal, not him.
Sheeran has also defended his decision to keep his concerts apolitical, citing his diverse audience, including children, who attend his shows for entertainment rather than political discourse.
Macklemore, in response to the controversy, pledged to donate $1 million earned from opening for Sheeran to organizations providing humanitarian aid to Palestinians and announced a "Free Palestine Tour." Other artists, such as Zach Bryan, have also worn "Free Palestine" attire during concerts.
Hetfield has a history of advocating for keeping music separate from politics. In a 2016 interview with the BBC, he explained that Metallica avoids divisive topics to connect with a broader audience. He reiterated this stance in a 2017 interview, stating that he dislikes discussing politics because it polarizes people, and he prefers music to be a unifying force.
Metallica is currently in the midst of its "Life Burns Faster" residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas, which began in October and is scheduled to conclude in March 2027.
