James Haskell, 41, has spoken about significant regrets concerning his past relationship following the dissolution of his five-year marriage to Chloe Madeley. The former rugby player reflected on their split three years after it occurred, admitting that numerous trips to Ibiza shortly after the birth of their daughter, Bodhi, placed considerable strain on their union.
Appearing on the Nolans Uncensored podcast, Haskell noted the challenges inherent in marrying a professional rugby player whose career demanded extensive travel and time away. "Did she marry a rugby player that was for basically 11 months a year playing and having no weekends and couldn't plan? Yes," he stated.
He also acknowledged his own workaholic tendencies, which he realized would continue to impact his presence even after retiring from his 17-year rugby career in 2019. "Did she think I think when I retired that I was going to be around all the time? But I was always a workaholic. So that was always going to be quite tricky," he said.
Haskell specifically mentioned taking "12 trips to Ibiza in one year just after Chloe had a baby," questioning whether this was the right decision. "And should I have done all them? No. Should I have been around more?" he mused, adding that hindsight often brings clarity to past decisions and overlooked issues in relationships.
Since his rugby retirement, Haskell has established a career as a DJ, frequently performing in Ibiza. He stated that his current approach prioritizes ensuring he has dedicated time for his daughter and other family members, leading to a more balanced life. "I now get to the point where actually I'm very happy with work and life," he shared.
Haskell and Madeley married in 2018 and welcomed their daughter in 2022, with their separation occurring in 2023. Following their divorce, Haskell briefly dated reality television personality Sara McLean and participated in the show "Celebs Go Dating."
Despite the difficulties of their breakup, Haskell and Madeley have successfully transitioned to co-parenting their daughter and have cultivated a friendship. Madeley previously commented on the challenging process of reaching this amicable state, noting that it took years to navigate the "trauma and toxicity" of their marriage's end. She expressed surprise at their ability to form a new bond and friendship after such a difficult period.
Madeley also indicated that the marital discord and the need to shield their daughter from arguments were significant factors in their separation. "One of the reasons I left my marriage was because it was so bad, it was becoming harder and harder to keep it from her and she was only a baby," she stated.
