Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville stated that he would only consider becoming a Republican under an improbable set of circumstances: if the Democratic Party were to fully embrace socialism and the Republican Party were to adopt more moderate, sane policies.
Carville described this hypothetical scenario as a "fantasy," comparing its likelihood to that of flying to the moon. "Well, if the Democrats went crazy and the Republicans went sane, then I probably would be a Republican," he told Fox News Digital. "But I don’t see any evidence that there’s any possibility that the latter could happen."
He expressed more optimism about the Democratic Party's direction, suggesting it is "more likely than not that the Democrats embrace sanity." Carville indicated that the party's trajectory will ultimately be determined by its primary voters.
Carville has recently voiced concerns about a growing far-left faction within the Democratic Party. He specifically mentioned streamer Hasan Piker, a self-described democratic socialist who has gained prominence. Carville stated unequivocally, "I am not going to be in the same party with Hasan Piker. If he becomes a force in a Democratic Party, I’m out of here."
Carville reiterated that if the socialist wing were to gain dominance in the Democratic Party, it would likely result in "some kind of schism." He affirmed his intention to allow Democratic voters to decide the party's direction, but added, "if it goes in that direction... then I’m going to be 82, OK, fine, go ahead, but not with me."
Progressive figures have responded to Carville's remarks. Hasan Piker, during a video appearance with Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, commented on Carville's statements, suggesting Carville was "sweetening the deal" by talking about leaving the party. Senator Bernie Sanders also weighed in, telling Carville that if he does not wish to be in the party, "he can start his own party."
