Longtime Democratic strategist James Carville has predicted a significant blow to former President Donald Trump's MAGA movement, contingent on a poor performance by Republicans in the upcoming midterm elections. Carville stated on his "Politics War Room" podcast that if the GOP experiences an unfavorable Election Day, the "MAGA number's going to go way down."

This forecast follows recent polling data highlighted by Doug Sosnik, a former senior advisor to President Bill Clinton. NBC News/Decision Desk polling indicates that 56% of self-identified Republicans now consider themselves "traditional" Republicans, compared to 44% who identify as MAGA. This represents a notable shift from April 2025, when 43% identified as traditional Republicans and 55% as MAGA.

Sosnik also pointed out that Trump faces challenges with non-MAGA Republicans. He expressed skepticism about the likelihood of "Laura Bush Republicans" in Texas voting for Republican Ken Paxton in his U.S. Senate race against Democrat James Talarico. Current polling averages from RealClearPolitics show Talarico holding a slight lead in that contest.

Carville suggested that a portion of MAGA supporters are drawn to Trump's ability to provoke strong reactions from political commentators and academics they dislike. He reiterated his expectation that MAGA numbers will decrease, adding that even those who identify as MAGA may find their enthusiasm waning if Trump's policies do not align with their preferences, despite enjoying his confrontational style.
