Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville believes the 2028 presidential primary will serve as a critical juncture for the future direction of the Democratic Party, potentially leading to a schism if the party's socialist wing gains significant power.
Carville stated that the ultimate decision on the party's trajectory rests with Democratic primary voters in 2028. He expressed his belief that this pivotal moment cannot be resolved through media commentary or opinion pieces but must be settled internally by the party's base.
"This I believe 100 percent — the future direction of the Democratic Party is going to be decided by Democratic primary voters in 2028," Carville told Fox News Digital. He anticipates a crowded field for the 2028 nomination, with potential candidates including figures like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Gavin Newsom, Pete Buttigieg, Kamala Harris, and Rahm Emanuel.
Carville specifically voiced strong disapproval of controversial streamer Hasan Piker, stating he would not remain in the same party if Piker became a significant force within the Democratic Party. He also noted that former West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin has similarly criticized the progressive wing.
"I am not going to be in the same party with Hasan Piker," Carville said. "If he becomes a force in a Democratic Party, I'm out of here. I have no intention of ever being in the same political party with that guy."
He reiterated his past prediction that a "schism" within the official party would be necessary if the democratic socialist wing were to take control. Carville emphasized that while he will continue to advise Democratic voters to make what he considers the right choice, he will ultimately defer to their decision on the party's direction.
"I'm going to let Democratic voters determine the direction the party goes in, and if it goes in the direction of — I'm pretty confident it won't, but if it goes in that direction, then I'm going to be 82. OK, fine, go ahead, but not with me," he stated.
