Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville has sharply criticized what he described as "left-wing idiots" within the Democratic Party, arguing that progressive and democratic socialist candidates are jeopardizing the party's electoral success.

In a recent appearance, Carville, who has advised Democratic presidential campaigns including those of Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton, stated that these progressive figures are "so fucking stupid" and misdirect their efforts by targeting fellow Democrats instead of Republicans. He specifically blamed Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) for Donald Trump's 2016 victory, calling him an "insurgent" whose actions led to a "catastrophic event."

Carville contended that the blame for dejected voters turning to the progressive wing does not lie with the Democratic Party establishment but with democratic socialists who he believes underestimate the differences between the two major parties. He cautioned voters against what he termed the "allure of false prophets," citing Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed as an example of a progressive who dismissed the need for party elites.

"It's not both parties' fault!" Carville emphasized, drawing distinctions between the parties on issues such as healthcare expansion, budget balancing, economic prosperity, and the Iran nuclear program. He identified himself as a "proud liberal" who believes in government's role as a partner to help citizens with education and retirement security, differentiating this from a "leftist" approach he suggested would dismantle existing systems.

Carville's remarks come as several progressive and democratic socialist candidates, including Claire Valdez, Darializa Avila Chevalier, and Brad Lander, have won primaries. These candidates often express hopes for national change while also criticizing the Democratic Party establishment. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who identifies as a democratic socialist, has supported some of these candidates.
