Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville has argued that the 2016 election of Donald Trump was a "catastrophe" and directly attributed it to Senator Bernie Sanders' critiques of the Democratic Party establishment. Carville condemned the rise of democratic socialists within the party, suggesting their approach paved the way for Trump's presidency.

"The most catastrophic political event of this century, I think, was the election of 2016," Carville stated. "How did Trump win? I'll tell you how. Because god---n Bernie Sanders is the reason that Donald Trump is president."

Carville posited that Sanders undermined Hillary Clinton's chances by characterizing American politics and the Democratic Party as "corporatist" to working-class voters in key states like Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin. He suggested this rhetoric alienated potential Democratic voters.

"They’re co-opted,’ that ‘there's no difference between the establishment Democrats and the establishment Republicans,’" Carville mimicked, criticizing the narrative pushed by some on the left. He expressed frustration with what he sees as a tendency among some Democrats to prioritize ideological purity or perceived moral superiority over electoral success.

"And somehow or another, among Democrats, something became more important than winning elections. And that became, ‘Oh, I want to feel superior to people. I want to say things that make me sound like I am part of the cool kids,'" Carville said. "You're taking the country into the ditch. Into the ditch. That’s what you’re doing."

Carville referred to these figures as "useful idiots" and "collaborators," asserting that their focus on systemic issues attributed to both parties obscures the reality of partisan responsibility for political outcomes. He specifically cited the elections of 2000 and 2016 as instances where the "left wing of the Democratic Party" contributed to Republican victories.

"I am a proud liberal. I am not a leftist," Carville concluded. "I can't go back and correct everything these goddamn idiots say... But what I can do is tell you, don't fall for the allure of false prophets. And all these people — go beat a Republican, then come back and I will respect you. Until you do that, I have nothing but contempt for you."
