Longtime Democratic strategist James Carville has advised Democratic candidates in the 2026 midterm elections to make Donald Trump the central focus of their campaigns. Carville suggested that candidates should adopt a strategy of doing "nothing" beyond opposing Trump, arguing that the election will be decided by voters' desire to reject the former president's direction.
During an appearance on MS NOW’s Ari Melber, Carville responded to the notion that Democrats need a more affirmative message focused on improving people's lives. He stated, "Why do they need to be for anything?" Instead, he predicted that voters would prioritize the choice between continuing in "the same direction of Trump, or do you want to slow this train down?" He believes "clearly people want to slow it down."
Carville emphasized that the upcoming midterms would be "about one thing and one thing only." He pointed to Trump's reported $400 million campaign war chest and his planned participation in the GOP's first-ever midterm convention, which Carville predicted would be a failure. According to Carville, the time for Democrats to present their own broader message will be during the 2028 presidential election cycle.
