James Carville Advises Democrats Against Impeaching Trump If They Gain House Majority

Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville has advised the party against pursuing a third impeachment of President Donald Trump should they secure control of the House of Representatives in the upcoming November elections. Carville contends that such an endeavor would be "highly unlikely" to succeed and would serve as a distraction from more productive avenues.

During an episode of the "Politics War Room" podcast, Carville and co-host Al Hunt discussed the potential impeachment strategy. Hunt expressed that while Trump may have committed impeachable offenses, pursuing impeachment would be a "waste of time and energy." He suggested that Democrats should prioritize investigations over impeachment proceedings.

Carville echoed these sentiments, pointing to the Supreme Court's perceived protection of Trump from legal consequences. "So, you investigate, and, of course, what you’re going to find — and you’re going to find it quickly — is overwhelming evidence of criminal activity," Carville stated. "Now, of course, he can’t commit a crime according to the Supreme Court because, well, he’s above the law."

He elaborated on the practical difficulties of impeachment, noting its time-consuming nature and the significant hurdles in securing the necessary votes in the Senate for conviction. "It’s time-consuming. It’s highly unlikely to be anything because of the — you need so many votes in the Senate," Carville explained. He anticipates that "a whole bunch of stuff" will be uncovered early in 2027.

Hunt agreed with the assessment that investigations should be thorough, even if they take time. "I am only against impeachment because I think it’s not going to succeed and will be a distraction," Hunt said.

Former Democratic advisor Dan Turrentine concurred with Carville and Hunt's position. "Al and James are right. To paraphrase James, it’s a simple math issue, stupid," Turrentine commented. "Unless something truly unimaginable [happens], there will not be 67 votes in the Senate to convict. And the public is not there, either."

Turrentine added that if Democrats win the majority, their focus should be on addressing the issues that matter to voters. "We should conduct appropriate oversight and let history and 2028 be the accountability," he stated. The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
