James Bond Screen Tests Continue as Mystery Candidate Arrives at Studios
Callum Turner auditioned Friday, with bosses narrowing down contenders for the iconic role.
The search for the next James Bond is intensifying, with a mystery candidate arriving at Bray Studios in Berkshire for screen tests on Saturday. This follows an initial audition by Callum Turner on Friday, as producers work to select from the final three contenders for the iconic 007 role.
Turner, 36, is reportedly facing competition from actors such as Jack Lowden of "Slow Horses," Josh O’Connor from "The Crown," and Jacob Elordi. Security was observed escorting a Mercedes away from the studios on Saturday afternoon, fueling speculation that an actor was present for an audition.
Screen tests are scheduled to continue throughout the weekend, with approximately three to five actors believed to have advanced to the final stages of the selection process. A source indicated that the auditions are crucial for impressing the decision-makers, with the coming days expected to be significant.
Bray Studios, a historic production site on the River Thames and former home to "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," was acquired by Amazon MGM Studios in 2024. The studio now oversees the Bond franchise.
The process to find a successor to Daniel Craig, who officially departed the role in October 2021 after "No Time to Die," has been ongoing for nearly a decade. Turner, an actor known for "The Emma," has long been considered a front-runner.
Lowden and O’Connor, both 36, have emerged as more recent contenders. The potential inclusion of Australian actor Elordi, 29, has reportedly drawn criticism from some fans who believe the role should be filled by a British actor.
In August, Bond producer Amy Pascal suggested that a casting decision could be made by the end of the year. This timeline would allow filming for the next installment to commence in 2027. Denis Villeneuve, director of "Dune," was announced in May to be taking on the project, with bosses at Amazon spearheading the search.
Pascal emphasized the meticulous nature of the casting process, acknowledging the challenge of following Daniel Craig's tenure and the need for a fresh, exciting direction for the character. She stated that the team is being "really, really methodical."
Previously, actors such as Harris Dickinson of "The King's Man" and Jack Barton from "SAS: Rogue Heroes" were rumored to be in contention.
Throughout the official film series, only six actors have portrayed Ian Fleming's British Secret Service agent: Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig.
