James Bond Casting Narrows as Finalists Prepare for Screen Tests

The search for the next James Bond has reached a critical stage, with actors Callum Turner and Jack Lowden emerging as finalists and slated for screen tests this weekend. The Hollywood Reporter revealed the latest developments, indicating that at least four actors are expected to test for the coveted role.

Deadline reports that Josh O’Connor, known for his role in "The Crown," is also anticipated to undergo a screen test. The identity of a fourth potential contender remains undisclosed, though sources suggest up to five actors may be involved in this final round of auditions.

Previously rumored candidates Jacob Elordi and Jack O’Connell are reportedly no longer in contention. Elordi, who garnered an Oscar nomination, was considered a possibility in the spring, while O’Connell, star of "Skins" and "Unbroken," had also been mentioned.

The next actor to portray James Bond will succeed Daniel Craig, who held the role from 2006’s "Casino Royale" to 2021’s "No Time to Die." The franchise, which began with Sean Connery in 1962’s "Dr. No," has seen several actors embody the titular spy, including Pierce Brosnan and Timothy Dalton.

Amazon MGM Studios, which acquired the rights to 007 from the Broccoli family in 2025, is expected to bring a younger iteration of the character to the screen, according to Variety. Denis Villeneuve is attached to direct the upcoming Bond film.

Lowden, 36, is also preparing to take on another significant role as Mr. Darcy in Netflix's upcoming adaptation of "Pride and Prejudice." His "Slow Horses" co-star, Gary Oldman, had previously suggested in September that the next Bond had already been chosen, though the announcement had yet to be made.

Lowden’s wife, actress Saoirse Ronan, addressed the persistent rumors in an interview with the Associated Press in October, stating that such discussions were not a focus in their household, with daily life and caring for their dog taking precedence.

An official announcement regarding the new James Bond is anticipated by the end of the year.
