Jameis Winston Takes the Reins for Giants After Jaxson Dart's Season-Ending Injury

The New York Giants' season has taken a significant turn with the news that quarterback Jaxson Dart is feared to miss the remainder of the year due to a knee injury. Dart sustained the injury four minutes into the team's 28-6 loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Monday night. The confirmed extent of the injury means that the team's fate will now fall into the hands of veteran quarterback Jameis Winston.

Winston, who last served as a full-time starter in 2019 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he led the league in passing yards and interceptions, brings a history of both high highs and low lows to the Giants' offense. "We have to get back in the win column, and that’s something I feel like we’re going to do," said edge Brian Burns. "If Dart isn’t ready, then we’re behind Jameis. Jameis has done it before, he’s a vet and a winner in this league."

If Dart's absence was limited to a few weeks, the upcoming schedule, featuring matchups against the Titans, Cardinals, Commanders, and Saints, might have offered a manageable stretch. However, with Dart sidelined for the season, Winston's performance will be critical. He demonstrated flashes of his potential in an overtime loss to the Detroit Lions last season, throwing for 366 yards with two passing touchdowns and a receiving touchdown. Conversely, his relief appearance against the Rams, where he completed 11 of 27 passes for 111 yards, raises concerns.

Running back Cam Skattebo expressed confidence in Winston, stating, "I don’t think you let it derail at all. We put our full trust in Jameis. When we get a whole week to prepare with him and get comfortable with him, I think it’s going to be a different story."

Player safety concerns are paramount, and with the severity of Dart's injury, the team is evaluating its backup quarterback situation. The Giants signed Winston to a two-year, $13 million extension earlier this month, making him one of the league's highest-paid backups. This contract reflects his value as an experienced option who can step in during emergencies. "Jame-o can spin it," said safety Jevón Holland. "I have no doubt he’s going to go out and ball — same thing he did last year when we played the Lions. I have confidence in the coaches to put a scheme together around the individuals that are playing to be successful — and it’s our job as defenders to give the ball back to our offense."

Upcoming opponents like the Cardinals, Titans, and Commanders currently rank poorly in total defense, presenting an opportunity for Winston and the Giants' offense. Even the New Orleans Saints, where Winston previously spent four seasons as a backup, are seen as a beatable opponent.

"Any time your quarterback goes down, obviously that’s a gut punch to the team," Winston acknowledged. "Just rallying around that and all of us having a fresh week to prepare and go out there and play our best football."

When asked about potential adjustments to the offensive play-calling with Winston under center, he indicated a focus on his strengths. "Obviously, I do some things really, really well, and we’re going to discuss that," Winston said. "We’re just going to focus on getting better and executing, being efficient and putting ourselves in a better position than we did today."

However, Winston's performance against the Rams highlighted areas of concern, including erratic passes and difficulty sensing pressure. Head coach John Harbaugh noted the team's execution issues, stating, "The lull that you perceive is the fact that plays aren’t being made. That’s where that feeling comes from. It’s not like they got down and that’s why we didn’t execute. We didn’t execute, that’s why there wasn’t energy."

Reflecting on a red zone possession where the team opted for four consecutive runs, Harbaugh admitted, "We didn’t have answers this week to get the ball in the end zone." The team's depth at quarterback is also under scrutiny, with the potential need to elevate Jake Haener from the practice squad if Winston were to also face an injury.

Despite the challenges, Harbaugh maintained, "Absolute faith in all of our players."
