Jameis Winston Steps In as Giants Quarterback After Jaxson Dart's Season-Ending Injury

Jameis Winston is set to make his 90th NFL start this Sunday, stepping in as the New York Giants' quarterback following the devastating news that Jaxson Dart will undergo season-ending surgery on his left knee. Dart, who was the team's starter, is now sidelined for the remainder of the season, elevating Winston, his backup, to the starting role.

Winston expressed strong confidence in his ability to perform, stating Wednesday after practice, "I am very confident in my ability to execute with precision and to lead the New York football Giants to victories." The Giants signed Winston to a two-year, $13 million contract extension earlier this month, securing him through the 2028 season. The team values him as a top backup quarterback and appreciates his leadership qualities.

While Winston had embraced his role as Dart's understudy, he maintained a desire to start. Now, he is tasked with leading the offense, beginning with Sunday's game against the Titans at MetLife Stadium. He described the opportunity as a "privilege" and emphasized his focus on elite fundamentals and precise execution.

Winston, 32, inherits an offensive system designed for Dart's specific skill set. His NFL career includes a 36-53 record as a starter over 12 seasons, with no season starting more than seven games since 2019. A former Heisman Trophy winner and the No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 draft, Winston is on his fourth NFL team.

In his previous start filling in for Dart in Week 2, Winston completed 11 of 27 passes for 111 yards and threw an interception in the end zone during a 28-6 loss to the Rams. He acknowledged the need for improvement, saying, "I have to execute better and I am going to execute better."

Head coach John Harbaugh commented on Winston's capabilities, noting, "he can throw it. I mean, he’s a big, strong, passing quarterback. He can throw the ball. Everybody that follows football has certainly seen Jameis play, and that’s — his strengths are evident, so that’s what you build around."

The Giants anticipate that Winston, having had a full week of practice with the starting unit, will perform at a higher level than he did against the Rams. Harbaugh added that Winston has been "engaged every step of the way," making the transition seamless, though not ideal.

Winston stated that football remains his top priority and his schedule is always planned to achieve his goal of being a Super Bowl-winning starting NFL quarterback. He believes he does not need to alter his approach now that he is the starter.
