Jameis Winston Defends Performance Amidst Giants' Low-Scoring Victory and McCarthy Acquisition

New York Giants quarterback Jameis Winston is pushing back against critics who question his performance and arm strength, even as the team secured a 12-7 victory against the Titans. Winston, who previously led the league in passing yards and interceptions in 2019, expressed frustration with the narrative surrounding his play, suggesting that a more conservative, winning approach is met with skepticism.

"Honestly, I feel like a lot of people are surprised that we can win a game in the manner that we did because everyone’s so used to me throwing for 500 yards and throwing interceptions, right?" Winston said. He contrasted this with how other quarterbacks' lower-yardage games are perceived, implying a double standard.

This discussion comes as the Giants traded a fifth-round pick for former first-round quarterback J.J. McCarthy to serve as Winston's backup, following an injury to starting quarterback Jaxson Dart. Despite signing a two-year, $13 million extension just weeks prior, Winston maintains that his focus remains on performing regardless of personnel changes.

"I have to play well regardless," Winston stated. "It doesn’t matter who’s in the building. When you’re the quarterback for the New York Football Giants, you have to give your team a chance to win, and that’s just the business that we’re in."

McCarthy, an NCAA national champion like Winston, joined his first Giants practice and worked with Winston. "I’m happy to have anyone that’s my teammate," Winston commented on McCarthy, adding, "But he’s curious. He wants to be great."

Winston acknowledged the expectations for high-octane performances but emphasized his commitment to leading the team to victory. "I know what I’m capable of, but also I know what’s required of me," he said. "I can make all the throws. I can do anything I put my mind to."

Looking ahead to Sunday's game against the Cardinals, who are averaging 21 points per game while allowing 27, Winston anticipates a need for more offensive output than the four field goals that secured the previous win. "My desire is to score some touchdowns this game," Winston said. "And that’s what my focus [is] on, man. Like, it’s required."

Through his recent appearances, Winston has completed 51 percent of his passes for 229 yards, resulting in a 55.6 quarterback rating. Wide receiver Isaiah Likely expressed confidence in his growing rapport with Winston, despite acknowledging some plays they wish they could have back. "Me and Jameis are fighting like heck to try to be on the same page," Likely said.

Head coach John Harbaugh has named Winston the starter for the foreseeable future. Winston stated that he feels challenged to improve daily, aiming to build on positives and eliminate negatives, with a long-term goal of becoming a Super Bowl-winning quarterback.
