Jameis Winston Cites Faith After Giants' Dramatic Victory
Quarterback Jameis Winston attributed the New York Giants' win to faith and preparation after a comeback victory.
New York Giants quarterback Jameis Winston has frequently spoken about his Christian faith throughout his NFL career. Following the Giants' recent victory, Winston shared the Bible verse he had on his wristband: Philippians 3:13-14.
The moment occurred after cornerback Deonte Banks secured the win with a 96-yard interception return for a touchdown as time expired. Winston approached Banks during a post-game interview and read the scripture from his wristband, emphasizing the importance of "forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to what is ahead."
In a subsequent interview with CBS Sports, Winston further elaborated on his reliance on faith. "Praise God," he stated. "Unwavering faith, people coming through when they needed to come through. It was only by the grace of God, man. There were so many supernatural things that happened today, and that was one of them. I believe in miracles, but that was preparation, that was hard work, and that was just a divine interaction for Tae Banks just getting off his injury, never giving up and coming back to get a pick-six and seal the day."
When asked about navigating the game's ups and downs, which saw him throw two interceptions but also three touchdowns, Winston referenced Philippians 3:13 again. "One thing I do is forgetting that which is behind me and reaching forward to what is ahead," he explained. "You think that I’m joking, but Philippians 3.13 states this, and you have to do it no matter the circumstances, conditions or facts. Desire what you will love, and I wanted this team to win a game."
He acknowledged the challenging nature of the game, stating, "It looked like the odds were against us – it really did. But God found a way. How great is He? His thoughts are higher than our thoughts, His ways are better than our ways. That’s only His grace."
Winston also commended his head coach, John Harbaugh, for instilling strong qualities in the team. "Our head coach is tenacious. Our head coach is a Kingdom man. Our head coach is instilling every one of these qualities in us, and it’s really a beautiful thing to see," Winston said. He also gave credit to the defensive and offensive lines.
The Giants currently hold sole possession of the NFC East lead with a 3-1 record, a position they have not been in since November 2015. The team is set to face the Washington Commanders in their next game, where Winston plans to continue relying on his preparation, teammates, and faith.
