Jalen Brunson Baby Name Trend Sweeps New York City
Following the Knicks' championship win, Jalen has seen a surge in popularity for newborns.
New York City has seen a notable increase in babies named Jalen since the New York Knicks secured their first NBA championship in 53 years. Data from the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene indicates that the number of newborns named Jalen more than doubled between March and early October.
During this period, a total of 32 babies were given the name Jalen, a significant rise from the 15 recorded in the same timeframe in 2025. This trend is a direct response to the New York Knicks' championship victory and the standout performance of star player Jalen Brunson.
Prior to the championship run, the name Jalen was not as common for newborns in the city. The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene noted on social media in mid-June that only five babies had been named Jalen since March 1. At the time, the department humorously speculated that the number would likely change, referencing the upcoming NCAA March Madness tournament.
The surge in the name Jalen reflects the broad impact of the Knicks' championship, which has resonated deeply within the city. Fans have expressed their admiration for Brunson and the team through various means, including this naming trend.
Some parents have humorously embraced the trend. One video posted on TikTok showed a father considering names like Jalen, Brunsina, Hart, Kat, Anunoby, OG, or Ogugua for his newborn daughter, though the couple ultimately chose Vivian Rose. Another social media post detailed how a son received the name Jalen after his father had joked years earlier that he would name his firstborn after any player who brought a championship to New York.
The Knicks are set to celebrate their championship as they open their season against the 76ers at Madison Square Garden, where they will raise their championship banner.
