Jake Lloyd, "Star Wars" Child Actor, Thanks Fans Amid Mental Health Journey
Lloyd, who played young Anakin Skywalker, appeared in an Instagram video with fellow "Star Wars" actor Daniel Logan.
Jake Lloyd, known for his role as a young Anakin Skywalker in "Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace," has made a rare public appearance, expressing gratitude to fans of the franchise. The 37-year-old actor appeared in an Instagram video alongside Daniel Logan, who portrayed Boba Fett in "Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones."
In the video, posted on Logan's Instagram account, both actors conveyed their thanks to the "Star Wars" fanbase. "We want to send a special message to each and every one of our Star Wars fans to let you know, ‘thank you so much,'" Logan said, with Lloyd nodding in agreement and adding, "Very, very much so."
Lloyd also shared his appreciation for his time working on the prequel, stating, "I really appreciate that time," referring to his experience as an 8-year-old actor on set.
Logan used the social media posts to address the persistent online bullying and backlash that he and Lloyd have experienced since their childhood roles in the "Star Wars" universe. He noted that both actors have been subjected to negativity, stating, "The limelight has been hard for both of us as kids." Logan expressed his intention to bring Lloyd back into the "Star Wars" community and expressed frustration with the negative reactions he has encountered.
Lloyd has publicly documented his struggles with mental health. In March 2023, he suffered a psychotic break, leading to his admission into an inpatient treatment program. His mother, Lisa Lloyd, recounted an incident where Jake turned off her car while she was driving on a busy road, which led to traffic disruption and police intervention. During that encounter, Lloyd's speech was reportedly nonsensical, described by his mother as "word salad."
Lloyd was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 2008. After the 2023 incident, he spent 18 months in rehabilitation. His mother reported that he has been making progress, becoming more social and engaging better with others. She also noted that once he began consistently taking his prescribed medication, his demeanor improved significantly, resembling his former self.
Despite past difficulties, Lloyd's mother emphasized that he still has affection for the "Star Wars" franchise, contrary to some public perceptions. "He loves all the new ‘Star Wars’ stuff,'" she said. "People think Jake hates ‘Star Wars.’ He loves it."
