Jake Haener's NFL Career on the Brink, Now One Play Away From Leading Giants
The backup quarterback faced uncertainty about his future in the league just one month ago.
New York Giants backup quarterback Jake Haener revealed that he contemplated the end of his NFL career just over a month ago, at one point questioning if he would even be on a team for the current season. Haener is now in a position where he is one play away from potentially leading the Giants.
"Sometimes, it is hard to continue and trust and believe," Haener told The Post on Thursday. "Four weeks ago, I didn’t know if I was gonna be in a camp. I didn’t know if I was gonna be on a team. I didn’t know what was going on. There were a lot of signs that said I wasn’t gonna be in the league this year."
Haener's path to this point included being released by the New Orleans Saints after spending a significant portion of the previous season on their practice squad. He was subsequently waived by the Kansas City Chiefs in May. In August, he had tryouts with multiple NFL teams, including the Giants, Texans, Lions, Ravens, and Dolphins.
Facing uncertainty, Haener considered alternatives such as playing in the UFL or the Canadian Football League. "I thought I might have to play in the UFL or the CFL. I thought, ‘Should I go to Canada? Is the NFL done?’ All these things were on the table,” he stated.
