Rep. Jake Auchincloss has secured victory in the Democratic primary for Massachusetts’ 4th Congressional District, fending off a challenge from progressive candidate Jason Poulos. Poulos, who had previously volunteered for Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign, ran on a platform that included Medicare-for-all, universal basic income, and an end to U.S. military assistance to Israel.
Poulos also advocated for taxes on corporate automation, stronger unions, and student debt cancellation, while calling for reduced military spending. Auchincloss, who has held the seat since 2021, faced his first Democratic primary challenger in this election.
Auchincloss, who is endorsed by AIPAC (the American Israel Public Affairs Committee), has also voiced criticism regarding aspects of Israel's actions in Gaza, stating in 2025 that some Israeli actions had "crossed lines" on humanitarian conditions. In July, Auchincloss was among more than 100 House Democrats who voted to eliminate $3.3 billion in U.S. military financing for Israel, while simultaneously reaffirming his support for the broader U.S.-Israel alliance.
Poulos' campaign highlighted Auchincloss' ties to AIPAC and his past support for military aid to Israel. Auchincloss, conversely, campaigned on lowering housing and healthcare costs, promoting economic growth, and addressing economic disruptions caused by artificial intelligence. He had previously been a registered Republican and worked on then-Governor Charlie Baker’s campaign, a point that his primary opponents used against him before he later rejoined the Democratic Party.
The primary contest reflects a broader internal debate within the Democratic Party concerning U.S. policy toward Israel, as evidenced by a recent House vote where 103 Democrats blocked aid to Israel. This shift signals a potential realignment within the party on foreign policy issues.
